How Therma Process Supports the Plastics & Polymers industry

In the plastics and polymers industry, manufacturers process raw materials into semi-finished and finished products such as granulates, powders, pellets and fibres. After polymerisation, washing or underwater pelletising, these materials often need to be dried and cooled before they can be stored, transported or processed further.

This market requires precise control over moisture, temperature and product movement. Too much residual moisture can cause defects during extrusion or injection moulding, while excessive heat can lead to discolouration, degradation or loss of product properties. Sticky materials, wide particle size distributions and high throughput requirements make polymer processing especially demanding.

Therma Process supports polymer producers, compounders, recyclers and chemical companies with tailor-made drying, cooling and air-treatment systems. Our shaking fluid bed dryers and coolers combine controlled plug-flow transport with low-frequency, high-amplitude movement to protect fragile granulates and improve process stability.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Precise moisture control for powders, pellets and granulates
  • Integrated drying and cooling in one continuous process
  • Gentle handling of fragile or sensitive polymer products
  • Stable plug-flow transport without hot spots or uneven treatment
  • Reduced sticking, agglomeration and production stops
  • Dust collection and air treatment for fine polymer particles
  • Lab testing with the actual customer product before final design

We work closely with customers to understand their raw materials, throughput requirements, and quality objectives. Based on this, we provide solutions that integrate seamlessly into new or existing production environments.

How does drying, cooling and conditioning work in the plastics & polymers industry?

Fluid bed drying is widely used for plastic granules, polymer powders, resins and additives where precise moisture control, uniform product quality and gentle product handling are essential.

Therma Process supports drying, cooling and air treatment for PVC, polypropylene, ethylene propylene, hard plastics, acrylic grains, EPS, polystyrene granules, PMMA, PPTA, ABS, CMC, cellulose, carbon fibre, recycled plastic granulates, polymer powders and fibres.

Moisture content has a direct impact on downstream processing. Too much residual moisture can create defects during extrusion or injection moulding, while over-drying can affect processing behaviour. Controlled drying helps keep the final product within specification and improves batch-to-batch consistency.

Many polymer powders and granulates become tacky at elevated temperatures. This can cause fouling, agglomeration, product loss and cleaning stops. Integrated drying and cooling helps bring the product below its softening point before it leaves the process, reducing the risk of sticking.

Polymers such as PVC can degrade, discolour or lose product properties when exposed to excessive temperatures. Separated air zones, controlled temperature profiles and plug-flow residence time help avoid hot spots and give each particle the same thermal treatment.

Polymer products can range from fine powders to coarse granulates. Conventional systems may struggle when fine particles blow out while coarse particles do not fluidise properly. Therma Process designs systems for a wide particle range, from approximately 80 µm to 30 mm.

Every polymer behaves differently. Therma Process can test the actual customer product in the lab to validate drying behaviour, residence time, sticking tendency and airflow requirements before final equipment design. This reduces risk and helps guarantee the required process result.
